California has passed one of the only sensible police brutality laws in the nation. The state now requires an officer who kills one of its citizens to show that the use of deadly force was “necessary” rather than merely showing that the use of deadly force was “reasonable.” In passing this law, California is leading the way in our country in valuing the lives of its citizens. Now, like any other person in the country, a law enforcement officer must show that ending a civilian’s life was a last resort, not simply one of possibly many “reasonable” options.
